The students of the Official School of Languages (EOI) of Arrecife have requested through a press release that the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands "guarantees the continuity" of the languages offered at the School and that it does not eliminate the advanced cycle of French and German, as the Ministry is considering, "because it makes no sense to be able to start studies and not be able to finish them."
The French and German students communicate that "we cannot be waiting every year to see if next year we will have the opportunity to continue our studies until we can complete the entire training cycle."
They add that since last year "we have been suffering the distress of not knowing whether or not there will be an advanced cycle, that is, the students who are in 4th year of French or German this year, we do not know if next year we will have the possibility of continuing our studies on the island, and the students who start new studies will be in the same situation: when they finish a cycle, they will be waiting to see if next year they will be able to continue their training."
Decision on June 23
The island director of Education, Juan Cruz Sepúlveda, reported this Friday that the Planning Commission of the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands will decide on June 23 whether the advanced cycle (5th and 6th) of French and German of the EOI of Arrecife will continue next year. He advanced that "in principle, everything points to the fact that they are going to estimate it."
The students, for their part, say they feel "aggrieved", since "our right to finish the studies started as is done in other islands is not respected." "We are looking for quick solutions and that each of the languages that is started finishes its training cycle. We think that the objective of the School of Languages, precisely, is to be able to bring young people and adults closer to language training with different schedules, affordable for students or workers who require it for their job or to expand their training, languages being in many cases essential, and not everyone has had the possibility at the time to acquire this training almost free of charge and with a good level."
