The magistrate of the Court of Instruction Number 5 of Arrecife, César Romero Pamparacuatro, has ordered the imprisonment without bail of seven people involved in Operation "Unión" and, in addition, has maintained the charges against more than a dozen people. That is the balance after concluding the first round of statements of the 20 detainees so far in the framework of this case, opened after the dismantling of an alleged network dedicated to the collection of illegal commissions.
The list of those sent to prison is made up of the leader of the PIL, Dimas Martín, accused of bribery and influence peddling, as well as the historical member of the PSOE, Segundo Rodríguez, the advisor of the Tourism Board, Matías Curbelo, the former deputy mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Ubaldo Becerra and the former Finance Councilor, José Miguel Rodríguez. All of them are accused of bribery. To this list we must also add the name of the businessman Luis Lleó, accused of two counts of bribery, and that of the member of the Lanzarote Chamber of Commerce, Fernando Becerra, also charged with bribery.
In addition to the six people who have been sent to prison, others have been released with charges. Thus, the member of the PIL youth Dayran Muñoz, the employee of the Tourism Board, Alfredo Rodríguez, the businessmen Jorge Álvarez, Enrique Gómez Ruiz and Fermín Curbelo, as well as the builder Manuel Gregorio Reina Fabre, the treasurer of the Lanzarote Chamber of Commerce, Eugenio Romero, and the businessman Jesús Manuel Martín Brito have been released, but charged with bribery.
At liberty with charges
Also released but with the charge of revealing privileged information was Rafael Arrocha, head of the Technical Office of the Arrecife City Council, who was arrested last Monday in the first phase of this judicial intervention. For her part, the administrator and owner of the communication company of "Crónicas de Lanzarote" and "Agustín Acosta Radio", María José García Acosta, was released after testifying on Thursday before the judge, who charges her with a crime of bribery and another of influence peddling.
Dimas Martín's daughter, Elena Martín, who serves as head of Contracting for the Arrecife City Council and, in addition, provided her services as a lawyer in the Technical Office of the Consistory, was also arrested on Monday and the judge ordered her release with charges a day later, although the TSJC has not made official what the crimes she is charged with are.
Regarding the other two people who were arrested last week, the businessman and member of the Chamber of Commerce Honorio Nicolás García-Bravo, and the secretary of the Yaiza City Council, Vicente Bartolomé Fuentes, it has not been officially notified what their situation is, although according to what has transpired, both are at liberty. In the case of Bartolomé Fuentes, at the time of his arrest it was reported that he was charged with bribery. Regarding García-Bravo, neither his arrest nor his release was officially communicated.
In addition, apart from the 20 people arrested, there are also other charges in the framework of this case. Among them, as La Voz de Lanzarote was able to confirm, are those of three people linked to the architectural studios that were searched last week.
