The spokesman for the scientific committee of the Canary Islands, the professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Ulpgc), Luis Serra, proposes to relax some restrictions imposed by the coronavirus in Tenerife and increase them in Lanzarote.
In a 'post' published on his social networks, he commented that there is a "special concern" with the epidemiological situation in Lanzarote and also with Fuerteventura, with a growth of more than 400% in the Accumulated Incidence in the last 7 days since January 1 compared to the 60% increase in Gran Canaria, the 40% decrease in Tenerife and a significant outbreak in El Hierro.
Serra Majem explains that the effects of the Epiphany holiday are still missing from the statistics and foresees that from January 18, the contagiousness index will return to below 1 -currently it is set at 1.23 in the last 7 days-.
In the case of Gran Canaria, despite its upward trend, he is not in favor of increasing the restrictions -it is at level 2, like Lanzarote-, while he predicts an increase in cases in the two eastern islands in the next four or five days.
"If we follow the recommendations and stop parties and meetings for a few weeks, everything will be fine. We are paying for the Christmas excesses and breaches of a minority," he says.
In principle, the Canary Islands Government Council, which meets this Thursday, is expected to make new decisions on the control of the pandemic in the archipelago.
