More than 2,500 high school students from all the institutes of the island will be able to participate in the activities that, during these weeks and until next January, will be developed by the Road Safety and Education Service of the Cabildo of Lanzarote within its workshop "GPS: Group of Safe People", which in turn is part of the Christmas campaign launched by the Cabildo of Lanzarote together with the project "Drive without alcohol".
This Thursday, one of the practical activities was carried out at the IES Arrecife, which was attended by the Councilor for Youth, Sports and Road Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Migdalia Machín, who presented the Christmas campaign, together with the President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés.
The councilor was able to learn firsthand about the activities of "GPS" and the opinion of its recipients, young people between 16 and 17 years old. Migdalia Machín wanted to highlight the good reception that the workshop has among students, as well as the purpose of the workshop: "It is about raising awareness among young people that they should not drive under the influence of alcohol, or get into a car whose driver has been drinking. But also the importance of using the seat belt, controlling the speed, etc. In the end, what it is about is to train future drivers in good practices...".
Group of Safe People (GPS)
The Road Education program "GPS: Group of Safe People" will be developed until next January in all educational centers on the island of Lanzarote and is aimed at 1st year high school students. The classes and talks that are given to high school boys and girls have a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical classes cover concepts such as safe driving, risk factors to avoid, active and passive safety, etc.
The practical classes have demonstrations that recreate the overturning of a car, to emphasize the importance of fastening the seat belt, and simulations of how dangerous it would be to drive a vehicle when the driver is under the influence of alcohol.
The main objectives of the "GPS" program are to reduce the number of traffic accidents in which young people from the island of Lanzarote are involved, to transmit the importance of safe and responsible behavior, and to promote correct habits in terms of traffic and road safety.
