The president of the Socialist Parliamentary Group, Nira Fierro, accused this Tuesday the Government of the Canary Islands and the Popular Party of "boycotting" the Catalogue of Francoist vestiges, promoted by the previous Executive. In addition, she added that it fails to comply with the Democratic Memory Law and the Canary Islands Historical Memory Law.
“They are neglecting their duties and are demonstrating how little they care about the reparation of the victims of Francoism”, added Fierro, who spoke in a question from the Socialist Group to the Vice President of the Government (PP) and Minister of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Self-Employed, on whether he considers it necessary for compliance with the Democratic Memory Law and the Canary Islands Historical Memory Law to have a Catalogue of symbols, streets, monuments and Francoist mentions in the Canary Islands, following the announcement by the Canary Islands Government to repeal the catalogue promoted by the previous government of Ángel Víctor Torres.
The socialist deputy blamed the current Executive for delaying in time “without justification” a “matter of democratic dignity”. “We wonder why you neglect your duties with democratic memory and why you care so little about the reparation of the victims of Francoism, and what we believe is that you do it for ideology.”
Fierro accused the Government of “looking for excuses” not to comply with what “does not interest them”, and of building a story based on “falsehoods” to evade their responsibilities.
In this sense, she recalled that the court ruling “in no case” establishes the repeal of the Catalogue, and that it is “false” that it is only limited to the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. “Why haven't you published the rest of the capitals with the Catalogue delivered since July 2023? Or do you only want to talk about Santa Cruz as an excuse?”
The president of the Socialist Group stated that Manuel Domínguez, vice president of the Government and president of the PP in the Canary Islands, is “uncomfortable” with this issue. “Even so, I will tell you that the Democratic Memory Law and the Canary Islands Historical Memory Law will be fulfilled with or without you, with mayors supporting or without mayors supporting, for a matter of justice, reparation, dignity and democratic truth.”
Fierro announced that the Socialist Group will request the Board of Parliament to officially declare the Plenary Hall of the Regional Chamber as a monument for Historical Memory, with the aim of fulfilling the socialist commitment to the reparation of the victims of Francoism.
“Here, in this same Plenary Hall during 1936 and 1937, dozens of courts-martial were held that ended with the shooting of men and women, the majority belonging to the CNT. For them, for Don José Alonso Pérez, Marcos Báez Afonso, Tomás Cabrera, Francisco Infante, Domingo Dieppa, Modesto Carballo, Teresol Guerra, Ginés Ramírez and Vicente Talavera. For them, for those I have not named, truth, justice and reparation”, she added.
