Not a few politicians from Lanzarote have passed through the Tahíche prison in recent years or other penitentiary centers. The one who has had to face the solitude of the cell the most times is the historical leader of the PIL Dimas Martín, who during his time as a politician entered prison on October 20, 1998 for the Guatiza bathing area case.

Later, he re-entered prison on January 10, 2004 to serve a three-year prison sentence for bribery.

Martín was convicted in 2000 for buying the vote of a former PP councilor in the Arrecife City Council. In December 2006, he returned to Tahíche to serve an eight-year sentence for embezzlement and crimes against the Public Treasury and Social Security during his management of the Teguise Agroindustrial Complex.

In his cell in Tahíche, Dimas Martín was arrested again on May 25, 2009, within the framework of the first phase of Operation "Unión". From there, he was sent to the Tenerife II prison and, after being transferred to Lanzarote to testify before Judge César Romero Pamparacuatro, he was arrested again and sent to the Tahíche prison on April 24, in the third phase of this operation, baptized as "Jable".

Dimas Martín is not the only politician who has passed through prison in recent years. To this name we must add the names of the first detainees and sent to provisional prison in the first phase of Operation "Unión". Then, the PIL councilors in Arrecife José Miguel Rodríguez and Ubaldo Becerra, as well as the former vice president of the Cabildo, the socialist Segundo Rodríguez, as well as Dimas Martín himself, were imprisoned provisionally. In this same operation, businessman Fernando Becerra, developer Luis Lleó, as well as Matías Curbelo, Dimas Martín's right-hand man, were also sent to prison. All of them spent some time in Tahíche but, later, some were sent to other prisons in the Canary Islands to, finally, be released on charges.

Months later, on October 4, 2009, the former mayor of Yaiza and vice president of the PNL, José Francisco Reyes, occupied a cell in Tahíche, who was admitted by order of the magistrate of the Court of Instruction Number 2 of Arrecife, which is investigating the case for the alleged plot for the granting of illegal licenses in Playa Blanca. Reyes left prison on December 18, 2009, after paying 120,000 euros bail.

To these politicians are now added the names of those arrested in the third phase of the "Unión" case and who the investigating judge sent to provisional prison. That is, María Isabel Déniz and Antonio Machín, as well as the official Rafael Arrocha and Jacinto Álvarez. This same Tuesday, another politician, the former mayor of Haría, Juan Ramírez, joined this list of imprisoned politicians.
