The Canary Islands Health Service has published new calls to select four heads of service for the Molina Orosa Hospital. Specifically, it needs to fill the position of head of the General and Digestive System Surgery Service, head of the Clinical Analysis Service, head of the Internal Medicine Service and head of the Cardiology Section. In the first two cases, the positions are currently vacant, while the other two are occupied "provisionally", according to the announcements published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands.
Since the publication of the call this week, interested parties have one month to submit their applications. The selection process will be based on the "evaluation of the professional curriculum of the applicants" and on a "technical project related to the management of said Service".
In all cases, the positions are contemplated in the organic staff of the Molina Orosa Hospital and will be filled on a "temporary" basis, since the regulations establish that "with a maximum frequency of four years", it is "necessary to proceed with the evaluation of the selected candidates, for the purposes of their continuity" in the position. In the case of the head of the General and Digestive System Surgery service, the previous one had been appointed just over two years ago, in mid-2014, but now the position has become vacant again.
In recent years, the Lanzarote hospital has faced several changes in some of the main service headquarters. For example, in February 2015, the Canary Islands Health Service appointed four new heads of service (Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hospital Pharmacy and Otorhinolaryngology). And a year earlier, it had appointed new heads not only in General Surgery (which is what has become vacant again now), but also in Psychiatry and Ophthalmology.
"It is positive that periodically new talents are given the opportunity"
"This should not cause any concern to the population, quite the opposite," says the manager of the Lanzarote Health Area, José Luis Aparicio Sánchez. And, as he explains, currently, "by law, the head positions are not for life as they were in the past, but have a duration of four years." Therefore, he points out that now "these appointments are always provisional" and are currently "immersed in the renewal process", having elapsed that period.
"It is positive that periodically, every four years in this case, new talents are given the opportunity to occupy positions of responsibility in the system," considers Aparicio, who wanted to clarify that this is why these announcements have now been published in the Official Gazette, "in the interest of transparency and equal opportunities for all professionals to be able to access positions of responsibility and management."
In addition, he maintains that although these head positions have to be "renewed", "in no case" have there been "vacancies", "understanding vacancy as absence of heads". "Each and every one of these services has its corresponding heads and there has been no power vacuum, desertion or mass resignation of heads, or anything similar," assures the manager.
