The waste transfer plant of La Graciosa will be finished this year

The waste transfer plant that has been built in the Las Agujas area, in the center of the island of La Graciosa, at a cost of 600,000 euros, will begin to be electrified next week, hoping that it will be completed at the end of the summer and will be fully operational by the end of 2010. "This will definitively end the garbage problem in the Natural Park," said the Councilor for the Environment of the Teguise City Council, Domingo Cejas.

The plant, which is 300 square meters, is built underground to avoid visual impact. In addition, the land will be removed on the outside to facilitate the colonization of plants in the area and reduce visual impact.

All the garbage will be transferred to this center, where it will be compacted and transferred to Órzola, the point where it will be collected by the Cabildo's waste service, which will transfer the remains to Zonzamas for final treatment. The center will need three people to start it up.

When it becomes operational, the La Graciosa landfill "will be sealed, cleaned, and then actions will be initiated for the total regeneration of the area." The cost of this last phase is included in the overall plant project.
