The Government of the Canary Islands has approved this Tuesday a proposal that seeks to improve the system of awarding protected housing, changing the scoring system to a lottery so that "all families have the same opportunities for access" and creating new housing reservation quotas for special social sectors, such as battered women or single-parent families.
This was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Housing of the Canary Islands Government, Antonio Castro, after the meeting of the Governing Council, of which he is a spokesperson. Thus, this draft decree is approved and will be sent to the Canary Islands Advisory Council.
The main novelty of this proposal is that access to protected housing for special quotas will be done by lottery, instead of by points, in the words of Castro Cordobez, to try to ensure that families who have been trying to access housing for several years because a particular condition prevents them from obtaining enough points now have a more equitable opportunity.
Thus, "a priori, all families have the same opportunities for access". The new quotas that are opened will be for young people and the elderly, for exceptional situations or for families with a reduced composition. These quotas have a reservation of five percent, except for single-parent families, which are reserved 10 percent of the available houses.
With this reservation method, families that previously did not enter because they lacked the necessary points now have an opportunity to access. However, general access, which reserves 50 percent of the housing, and which is accessed by points, remains in force.
