The Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Mercedes Roldós, has pledged "to adopt all necessary measures by the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, the Island Directorate of the General State Administration and Traffic so that the Ironman continues to be held in Lanzarote." This was communicated by the Cabildo through its president, Pedro San Ginés, who addressed this issue with Roldós.
Likewise, the Government Delegation has informed the Island Corporation of the convocation of a coordination meeting for this sporting event, scheduled for next Friday, April 7. Among the participants will be representatives from the Delegation, the Island Directorate, Traffic, the Security and Emergency Consortium, and the Sports Area. This meeting aims to "find solutions to overcome this situation and ensure that the roads where the Ironman passes keep at least one of their lanes open to traffic," as explained in the statement.
Mercedes Roldós has requested the institution presided over by San Ginés for "greater involvement and effort in the organization of the event, providing a larger allocation of human resources and signage material such as cones, tapes, etcetera, to ensure the safety of athletes, the public, and traffic," the Cabildo specified.
Concern about the possibility of road closures
The Government Delegate in the Canary Islands responds in this way to the concern expressed by the Island Councilor for Sports, Patricia Pérez, after "Traffic proposed the complete closure of the island's roads as a condition for holding the next Ironman." That is why San Ginés addressed Roldós to express his concern about "the danger of suspension and possible loss for the island of this event, by proposing alternative routes incompatible with its celebration."
The president of the Cabildo highlighted "the speed and diligence with which Mercedes Roldós answered the call" and assured that the delegate "shared his concern, being aware of the importance of this event as a flagship of the Cabildo's strategy to consolidate the island as a tourist-sports destination."
