The cleaning and garbage collection service workers of Tías, San Bartolomé, Teguise and Tinajo announce an indefinite strike

The workers of the three companies, integrated in the U.G.T. and Intersindical Canaria unions, will inform next Monday of the minimum services planned for the days they remain on strike, although they are open to reaching an agreement in the meeting that the Strike Committee plans to hold with the companies on Tuesday of next week.

As explained to La Voz by the spokesman of the Strike Committee, Juan Antonio García Bollero, the three companies that have been granted the cleaning and garbage collection service in the four municipalities do not comply with the current agreement because, among other things, "they hire personnel incorrectly" without convening the Hiring Commission composed of representatives of the companies and members of the company committee.

They denounce that their employers do not keep the payment of life insurance for their workers up to date, so that when they have needed to use their services due to an accident or illness, "the workers have found that they could not collect because no one had paid the policy" says Juan Antonio García.

The failure to pay bi-weekly advances to workers who require it, "despite the existence of favorable judgments to employees" points out the spokesman, the non-payment of settlements to workers whose contracts come to an end- "some have been waiting for six months"- as well as the "scarce negotiating will" on the part of the employers in the negotiation and revision of the collective agreement for the year 2007, are other reasons that have led the almost 80 people responsible for cleaning and garbage collection in four municipalities of the island to go on an indefinite strike.
