The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, and the municipality's Councilor for Education, Silvia Santana, presented to the Deputy Minister of Education, Universities and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, María Dolores Rodríguez, and the Island Director of Education, María Celeste Callero, the need to develop a study for the implementation of basic and intermediate level Vocational Training (FP) cycles at the IES Yaiza.

Municipal officials argued their proposal on "the lack of places in centers in Lanzarote" that offer this educational modality and on "the future availability of classrooms at the IES Yaiza when the students who are now studying there move to the secondary school (CEO) that is being built in Playa Blanca".

In the meeting held last week at the Mayor's Office, Óscar Noda and Silvia Santana specified to the Government "the waiting list, for example, of almost forty students who were opting for the basic training cycle in Administration and Management - Administrative Services this start of the course at the IES Playa Honda or the handicap such as the Commerce and Marketing cycle that is taught in the afternoon at the IES Las Maretas, which due to the schedule does not allow boys and girls to combine their classes with sports activities".

"We believe that the City Council's proposal should be considered by the Government of the Canary Islands because it would not only favor students from Yaiza, but students from other municipalities who demand training in hairdressing and other trades could also study there", the mayor points out.

Concern about the "delay" in the works of the CEO of Playa Blanca

The municipal representation also conveyed to the Government its "concern about the delay in the works of the CEO Playa Blanca, since the execution plan aimed to finish it in the summer of this year". "We await the completion of the works so that the Government provides it with furniture and complementary equipment for the start of the new course in September 2020", says Noda.

Yaiza recalls that the CEO Playa Blanca "will not only prevent ESO students from traveling to the IES Yaiza located next to Mácher, but will also alleviate the burden of student population suffered by the CEIP Playa Blanca".

Meanwhile, the City Council reminded the Deputy Minister and the Island Director "the government's commitment to eliminate the barracks from the educational centers." And the fact is that the schools of Yaiza and Playa Blanca have some of these "provisional" classrooms, as does the IES Yaiza.

In terms of modernization of educational infrastructures, the City Council put on the table other commitments such as the construction of new classrooms and the roofing of the playground of the CEIP Yaiza, as well as the complete change of the carpentry of this same center. "These are interventions under the competence of the Government of the Canary Islands and it is our duty to communicate them and ensure their execution", adds the mayor.
