The cleaning and permanent beautification program of public spaces called 'Cuidando Lanzarote' has already led to the removal of around 52.4 tons of waste in Lanzarote and La Graciosa in just over a month, according to the Cabildo this Thursday. Of this amount, more than 23,500 kilos have been removed from the Argana Alta neighborhood, one of the first places of action of this program promoted by the Cabildo on the initiative of the Employment area, directed by the councilor Manuel Cabrera, and financed with about 1.3 million from the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) of the regional government.
Cabrera, who supervised the beautification and cleaning work carried out in Argana Alta earlier this week accompanied by the councilors of the Arrecife City Council Tomás Fajardo and David Duarte, appreciates "the collaboration that the City Councils are providing, as is the case of Arrecife, which has made a truck and a mechanical shovel available to the program".
The councilor points out that "as important as the work that the 130 people hired to beautify the island are carrying out is that citizens become aware that keeping Lanzarote clean and beautiful is the task of each and every one of us who live here".
In this sense, Manuel Cabrera considers it "lamentable to see how, after the cleaning in Argana Alta was completed on Tuesday, this Thursday there is already garbage in the lots again", so he appeals to the City Councils "to establish surveillance and fine the responsible people".
Six projects
The 'Cuidando Lanzarote' program is developed through six projects. The first is a special waste collection service, debris and cleaning of Zonzamas, consists of the removal of plastics, paper, cardboard and other waste in the vicinity of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex and its areas of influence, where to date 3,800 kilos have been collected.
Another is a cleaning and conditioning service for general and municipal roads, paths and trails on the island, which has so far resulted in the removal of 15,500 kilos of waste and weeds on the Tahíche-Guatiza road and the one that leads to Caleta de Famara. The third is the 'Island cleaning and beautification', consists of the conditioning, landscaping, beautification and pruning of palm trees throughout the island's geography. The first action has focused on Argana Alta and concluded with the removal of 16,060 kilos of waste.
To these is added the 'Cleaning and maintenance of the coastline', from where a ton of waste has been removed in the three areas in which it has been acting to date, which are Playa Honda-Los Ancones, Orzola-Caleta Caballo and Caletón Blanco-Punta Mujeres. The fifth is the 'Cleaning of urban areas', with which so far about 7,500 kilos of waste have been collected in Argana Alta. This project includes the cleaning of La Graciosa, where about 5,500 kilos of waste have also been removed.
Finally, the sixth project focuses on the 'Conservation and improvement of the regions of Guatiza and Mala and degraded agricultural spaces in the surroundings of the Protected Natural Space of La Geria', which is executed through Grevislan, the Special Employment Center of Adislan, and consists of the rehabilitation or improvement of degraded farms for the production of cochineal in Mala and Guatiza and in a state of abandonment in La Geria. To date, about 3,100 kilos of waste have been removed.
Manuel Cabrera recalls that these six projects included in the 'Cuidando Lanzarote' program, and with an initial duration of six months, will continue for at least another three years with the opening of new bidding processes.
