The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has denounced the "serious situation" faced by users of the Insular Library, who have been enduring extreme temperatures for days due to the absence of air conditioning in the middle of a heat wave, with red alerts activated by the State Meteorological Agency.

The socialist councilor Alberto Aguiar has lamented that “at a time when extreme temperatures are being reached on the island, the Cabildo has not been able to guarantee minimum conditions of comfort and safety for the people who come to the Insular Library, many of them students and candidates who depend on this resource to prepare for their exams or carry out work”.

Aguiar recalled that the Insular Library is an essential public service for the cultural and educational life of Lanzarote and that “the neglect of its basic maintenance is another example of the lack of foresight and care on the part of the government group”.

“The heat not only makes the stay inside unbearable, but can also have consequences for health, especially in vulnerable people. It is not acceptable that, in the middle of a heat wave, the Cabildo's response is indifference”, added the socialist councilor.

The PSOE "demands that Oswaldo Betancort and the responsible council act immediately to repair and put into operation the air conditioning system of the Insular Library, adopting urgent measures to guarantee a safe and dignified use of the facilities while the heat wave lasts".

“The Cabildo has the obligation to offer public spaces in adequate conditions, and even more so when it comes to places that fulfill a first-rate educational and cultural function”, concluded Aguiar.
