The Department of Public Works of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has started the project to improve the LZ-20 road, in the section between Tiagua and Tinajo, which includes about four kilometers considered one of the "most dangerous" of the island's road network.

This marks the final stretch of the island's First Road Plan, designed in 2005, which has involved an investment of almost six million euros.

This was announced this Wednesday by the Minister of Public Works, Fabián Martín, with the aim of warning "the more than 4,500 drivers who use this road to Tinajo on a daily basis that in just over a month this road will be completely closed to traffic, with traffic being diverted along a road that runs parallel to the Tinajo cemetery".

The execution project is budgeted at 1,890,000 euros and will have an execution period of about eight months.

Palm tree relocation

Although the earthworks are about to begin, pending the completion of the expropriation procedures affecting 102 plots and totaling 48,258 meters, these days and in collaboration with the Department of the Environment of the Cabildo, "the palm trees have been marked, which once analyzed and in accordance with the environmental protocol established by the technicians, will be moved from place, since we must not forget that, precisely, the two rows of palm trees that border this road are configured as one of the main dangers that are detected for drivers".

In total, there are more than 1,198 palm trees that are counted on both sides of the road. According to the protocol that is followed "40 percent of them have to be destroyed compulsorily, because the palm trees are sick, and the remaining 60 percent will be relocated in other areas of the municipality, creating recreational spaces". However, some of these same palm trees will be replanted on the sides of the new resulting road, although 18 meters away from the shoulder.

As explained by the Minister of Public Works, "the importance of this work is maximum because it involves eliminating the most dangerous points that are detected in our road network and that has cost more than one accident and one life." Thus, and according to the project, the works will focus on the substantial improvement of the road surface, signage and marking; its resurfacing and the expansion and conditioning of the road margins. The two lanes will have a width of seven meters to which will be added 1.5 meters for each shoulder, resulting in 10 meters of road while until now it is six.
