The Plenary Session of the Cabildo of Lanzarote today approved the regulatory bases for subsidies for the feeding of breeding animals of sheep and goat livestock. The amount of the subsidy will be a maximum of 150 euros per head of female sheep or goat livestock that undergoes the breeding process.

The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Ángel Vázquez, stated that “the nutritional maintenance of animals that form a livestock farm is the most difficult current expense to balance so that the farm is profitable”, so this type of aid “is very important for the maintenance of the island's livestock herd.”

Added to this are the climatic conditions of the island, characterized by the lack of rain and drought, which prevents the farmer from taking advantage of the pastures that he would obtain with grazing. “In this way”, adds the councilor, “the raw material used for feeding livestock must be imported, which reduces the performance of the farms.”

“In order to maintain the livestock herd on the island and to compensate for the feeding costs of livestock intended for replacement, from the Cabildo, and with its own funds, we have increased the amount of these subsidies, which reach 150 euros per head of livestock, both sheep and goat”, details Ángel Vázquez.

Applicant requirements

Both natural and legal persons who have updated the goat-sheep census before March 31 of the year establishing the call for subsidies may be beneficiaries of these aids, such as sheep-goat livestock farms with 5 or more Livestock Units and that are registered in the REGA.

The deadline for submitting applications will begin the day after the publication of the Call in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas and will end once a period of thirty calendar days has elapsed from said publication. Applications to take part in these subsidies will be available to interested parties at the Electronic Headquarters of the Cabildo de Lanzarote in the section corresponding to “Subsidies”.

Councilor Ángel Vázquez affirms that “these subsidies will be compatible with others from different organizations or institutions, as long as the sum of all the aid and subsidies obtained does not exceed 100% of the real and executed expense in the exercise of the subsidized activity”.

The number of animals to apply for in the subsidy may reach 100% of the heads of female sheep or goat livestock included in the RIIA of the livestock farm at the time of the aid application.
