The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the call for subsidies for operating expenses on livestock farms, aimed at alleviating the high costs faced by livestock farmers in Lanzarote and La Graciosa. This measure is part of the Cabildo's line of action to strengthen the primary sector and guarantee the viability of farms on the island.
Oswaldo Betancort highlighted that this year the call amounts to 2.38 million euros, which represents a significant increase compared to last year, when 1.4 million euros were granted. "This increase reflects our commitment to continue supporting farmers in these difficult times," said the president.
In addition, due to the temporary closure of the Insular Slaughterhouse for works, this year's subsidy includes new concepts such as the transport of animals and carcasses, which were not previously considered. "We know that the closure of the slaughterhouse has generated additional complications, so we have decided to cover these expenses to alleviate the impact this has had on our farmers," added Betancort.
The call covers up to 70% of eligible expenses (compared to 50% in 2023), including food, water transport in tanks, personnel, electricity and other key inputs. This support seeks to improve the profitability of farms and contribute to the active aging of the primary sector.
"We want young people to see an opportunity for the future in the sector, while facilitating the work of those farmers who have dedicated their lives to keeping our farms alive," Betancort stressed.
The president also reiterated the importance of continuing to promote sustainable livestock farming and generational change, with special attention to young people and farmers who opt for organic livestock farming.
Applications may be submitted during the next 15 business days after the publication of the call in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas.
"It is essential that we take care of our rural heritage and support those who make it possible for this sector to continue to be a pillar of our economy," concluded Betancort, reaffirming the Cabildo's commitment to the farmers of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
