The Cabildo and the town councils of the different municipalities of the island have joined the acts of commemoration of International Women's Day this March 8. In the case of the first island institution, it has joined the call for partial stoppages planned for this Wednesday and has hosted a concentration from twelve noon to claim women's rights.
The Corporation has also adhered to the institutional declaration, promoted by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), which claims women's rights and, in turn, denounces sexist violence, and the discrimination they continue to suffer to access employment, education or health on equal terms. In addition, the Cabildo has changed its usual lighting to a violet color; a symbolic action to remember the fight for equality between women and men.
For its part, the Arrecife City Council at twelve noon held a concentration, in front of the Consistorial House, in which the Councilor for Equality, Victoria Sande, read a manifesto sent by the FEMP. Sande recalled in her reading "that this March 8 is a day to denounce the many forms of discrimination based on gender that continue to be rooted in our society".
"Challenge of local governments"
The Councilor for Equality also added that "this is a challenge that local governments face with daily determination, aware of its importance not only as a basic human right, but also as an essential element of coexistence, progress and sustainable social and economic development," she added.
Since March 1, a violet ribbon, a symbol of the feminist struggle, has been displayed in front of the facade of the Consistory. The concentration culminated with a minute of silence for the victims of gender violence. Also, from seven o'clock this Wednesday evening until midnight, the Castle of San Gabriel in the capital will be illuminated with violet spotlights, thus joining the commemoration.
And on Saturday, starting at half past eleven in the morning, the city will have an extensive awareness program organized by the Forum against Gender Violence, of which the capital City Council is a part. A demonstration has been programmed that will leave from the Four Corners and culminate in La Plazuela with a theatrical performance and the reading of a manifesto by Candelaria Ledesma, a retired teacher from the C.E.I.P. "Ajey" in San Bartolome.
Honorees in Tías
In the Town Hall of Tías, a manifesto has been read asking for real equality between men and women and the cessation of sexist violence. Likewise, the Consistory, through the 'Citizen Expression' project, recognizes this afternoon four women from the municipality, pioneers in various facets of the society of Tías in an act in the Senior Center.
The honorees are María Rodríguez, Josefina Gopar, Juanita Delgado and Luciana González, all of them residents of the municipality who have stood out for their work, dedication and generosity.
The reading of the institutional declaration in the Town Hall of Haría was carried out by the Councilor for Equality, Auxiliadora Fernández, who thanked the public employees for their attendance and congratulated all the workers at the end on this special day of vindication and reflection on the discrimination that many women continue to suffer today.
Acts in Teguise
In Teguise, an institutional act has also been carried out this Wednesday, but it has not been the only action to commemorate this day of vindictive character. Two of the most emblematic buildings of La Villa, such as the Castle of Guanapay and the tower of the Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, have joined the symbolic violet lighting.
And in the educational field, from March 8 to 13, the students of the IES of Teguise and Costa Teguise will receive the workshop 'The window of memories'. This workshop aims to "make the youngest aware of how the roles of women have changed over time", according to the Councilor for Women, Nori Machín. In addition, next Friday, March 16, the Esperanza Spínola theater group will perform the play "The window of equality", at 8:30 p.m.
