The Santo Domingo convent in Villa de Teguise hosted yesterday, late in the evening, the solemn act of Oath and Promise of new lawyers, who from now on will perform the function of law in the island of Lanzarote.
In total, ten new professionals will be part of the Lanzarote Bar Association. Raul Dayaram Idnanl, Antonio Ibán Doreste Rivera, Elena Alejandra López Rodríguez, Álvaro García Milla, Javier Aitor Galán Robles, Helena Vanesa Duque Lemes, Paola Olivo Díaz, Nieves María Sánchez Ferrer, Pino Rosa Rodríguez Armas and Carlos Ortega Regullón have solemnly sworn as lawyers yesterday afternoon. Dressed in their black and elegant robes, they went up one by one to the convent stage to swear the oath, promising to serve the King with loyalty in the performance of their very important social function. Each of the new professionals was accompanied by two sponsors, prominent members of the Lanzarote Bar Association.
The event was attended by, among others, Carlos Carnicer Díez, President of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers, Don Antonio Ruiz Giménez de Aguilar, Technical General Secretary of the General Council of Spanish Lawyers, Don Rafael Fernández Valverde, Magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, as well as the Deans of the Canary Islands Bar Associations, including the head of the Lanzarote Bar Association, Francisco Torres Stinga. In addition, the entire senior management of the island's politics was there. Alejandro Díaz himself, former president of the Popular Party of Lanzarote, sponsored one of the newcomers to the profession. But Marcial Martín, Mario Pérez, Juan Santana, Ángeles García, María Isabel Déniz, José Torres Stinga were also there, as well as representatives of the municipalities of Tías and Tinajo, and important personalities from the business world. Only after the new lawyers had sat in their respective seats, the room could burst into applause to welcome the incorporations to the world of justice.
Immediately afterwards, Francisco Torres Stinga officiated the decoration of the lawyer Teresa de Jesús Martín de León, who received the Silver Medal of the Lanzarote Bar Association for 25 years of professional practice.
After the end of the event, which was attended by many illustrious personalities from the world of justice, the Magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, Don Rafael Fernández Valverde, gave a conference to the attendees entitled "European Constitution: Future or crisis for the Canary Islands".
After the conference, and without giving rest to the attendees, Marcial Francisco Hernández Cabrera was decorated with the Cross of Merit in Service to Law.
One of the most emotional and interesting parts of the ceremony was the speech given by Carlos Carnicer Díez, who congratulated the new lawyers for their incorporation into the Lanzarote Bar Association, and also gave a brief review of the very essence of the profession, insisting on the good faith with which lawyers must act in the performance of the function entrusted to them by society. Thus, Carnicer pointed out that "if we do not fulfill our profession in good faith, others will occupy our function in society. Truth, trust and absolute loyalty to the client are the basis of the legal profession".
Carnicer wanted to insist with special emphasis on the importance of maintaining professional secrecy. This, according to the dean's definition, is not a privilege of lawyers, but a duty, and a reflection of the fundamental rights of people. Carnicer unraveled to the novices the singularity of this duty and right, inherent to the performance of the work. "You will experience the miracle of the client's absolute trust, who will tell you the most intimate details of his life, because only then will he have blind trust in you", said the dean, who before concluding, also had a detail with the future enemies of the lawyers. Carnicer urged those incorporated to have consideration and respect for the opposing party, "because it is only the one that does not have the reason". Curious conception of justice, so typical of lawyers.
Once the delivery of the medals was finished, the attendees of the event moved to the Hotel Melia Costa Teguise, where they were offered a cocktail and a dinner to continue celebrating the incorporation of new lawyers on the Island.
