The Councilor for Social Welfare of the Teguise City Council, María José Costa, has announced the signing of an agreement with the Association of Disabled People of Lanzarote (Adislan), through which the City Council will take care of the costs of an apartment, which will be occupied by five young people belonging to this group. These people are around 30 years old, are from the municipality of Teguise, and with this benefit they will be able to become independent, as well as evolve in one of the objectives of this association, which is "to achieve autonomy, to be able to fend for themselves and leave the family nucleus."
The City Council will contribute 6,600 euros, an amount that will allow the annual payment of the rent, as well as the expenses of water and electricity. For its part, Adislan will be responsible for the proper functioning of this project, helping young people to organize themselves.
The group works to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families. This apartment that the City Council will pay for will fulfill one of its purposes, which is "to generate an environment with actions and practices that promote the full acceptance and participation of the group in the context that surrounds them."
The project aims to cover the learning demands regarding the autonomy of people with intellectual disabilities, thus promoting "self-determination". Through this proposal, "the necessary support for the enjoyment of leisure and independent living as a right of people" will be provided and promoted, according to the Teguise City Council in a statement.
