Plaza General Franco and Plaza 18 de julio, both in La Villa, will change their names to comply with the Historical Memory Law. This was decided by the specific heritage commission, created after the plenary agreement adopted on September 24.

The commission, made up of representatives of all the political parties present in the City Council and a neighborhood representative, agreed to return Plaza General Franco to its former name (Plaza de Santo Domingo), while the other will now be called Plaza Clavijo y Fajardo.

In the first case, according to the Consistory, "there were no doubts when making the substitution, since the neighbors never changed the name when locating it." And the fact is that Plaza de Santo Domingo, located in front of the Teguise City Council, has always been called this way, since the construction of the Convent that bears its name at the end of 1617. The name remained until 1936, when it was changed to General Franco.

The other transformation refers to Plaza 18 de julio, in the surroundings of Plaza de San Miguel (Plaza de los Leones), where the sculpture in homage to the female Canarian peasant is located. This square is divided into two parts, one part is called Clavijo y Fajardo; and the other 18 de julio. In the end, the denomination of the space is unified and it will only be called Plaza Clavijo y Fajardo. In the past it had two names, Plaza de Barrena and de los Hernández, due to the families who lived in the area.

The agreement adopted last week by the heritage commission must now be ratified in the next ordinary plenary session, in order to notify said decision to the appropriate bodies.
