Six people from the Saharawi collective of Lanzarote began a 48-hour hunger strike this Wednesday at 10 a.m. in front of the old Cabildo, on Calle Real in Arrecife, in solidarity with the 23 Saharawi prisoners who are in the Moroccan prison of Salé (Rabat) carrying out a hunger strike for a month to demand their freedom or have the opportunity of a fair trial.
The Saharawis denounce the situation in which these prisoners find themselves, who "have no right to sunlight or ventilation", and suffer "verbal and physical abuse". They also denounce the situation of the families, who have to travel some 1,300 kilometers to see their relatives for a quarter of an hour. The prisoners were arrested after their participation in the Gdeim Izik camp protests and some of them are currently in very poor health.
This hunger strike has also begun in the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf and in other cities in Spain, such as Madrid, Valladolid, Vitoria, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Granada, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Valencia.
