Six associations representing guards, corporals, non-commissioned officers and officers of the Civil Guard have issued a joint statement this Wednesday to request that "the pressures that try to influence the instruction of the disciplinary files" opened to the sergeant of the Seprona in Lanzarote, Gloria Moreno, who is currently suspended from her duties as a precautionary measure, cease.
"Since their inception, the files have been subjected to unacceptable pressures and interference, with the dissemination of periodic statements unrelated to the truth, in the media and social networks, in a clear attempt to influence the files through social and/or political pressure," denounce these associations of the Benemérita, who demand "respect" for this body and its internal procedures.
For months, environmental groups and associations have been sending statements and collecting signatures in defense of the sergeant and have even created a platform and started a collection of signatures, but the trigger for this statement is the article published this week by the newspaper El País, under the title "The ordeal of the agent who stood up to the hunters of protected birds".
"A crude manipulation"
According to the agents represented in these associations, that report "relates, without providing any objective data, the disciplinary files" opened to Gloria Moreno with a service carried out by this body in 2015 on the islet of Alegranza. "There is no direct or indirect relationship between the disciplinary files that are being processed against the sergeant in question and the service carried out in 2015 in Alegranza. To affirm the contrary constitutes a crude manipulation and a manifest deception to the citizens, without prejudice to the serious damage to the image of the Institution," they point out.
In their statement, the associations defend that the Seprona "has stood out since its creation for its unwavering work in favor of the environment and animal protection" and affirm that "on the island of Lanzarote it has developed since its creation in 1998 a great work in favor of the general interest and alien to pressures or particular interests, with very relevant services that are recorded in the newspaper archives". Therefore, they insist on asking for "respect for the professional image and honorability of the civil guards of the Seprona on the island of Lanzarote".
Finally, they conclude by expressing their hope that the statement will serve "to launch a request to the general public and to the society of Lanzarote in particular, for trust in an institution such as the Civil Guard that is at the service of the citizen, and whose public image does not deserve damage due to particular interests".
