The residents of La Asomada strongly oppose the construction of a viewpoint on the Tinasoria mountain, planned within the Special Plan of La Geria. Thus, they argue that Lanzarote already has "more than enough" infrastructure dedicated to the "mass consumption of the landscape for mass tourism".
According to these residents, the Special Plan of La Geria will facilitate the tourist use of the nucleus of La Geria such as, for example, wineries, restaurants, museums, shops and ecotourism, in general. In this sense, they affirm that creating a viewpoint in Tinasoria "makes no sense", because it would attract tourism to the upper area of this place, when the real interest lies "in the valley or the lower area".
"Here there is already a viewpoint in its natural form. This free and sustainable resource appears in prestigious guides such as "Lonely Planet" among others, where it is advised to hike through the area to enjoy beautiful landscapes," they say. The residents propose that if they want to improve this area, they should establish a hiking network, pedestrian or mountain bike.
"Converting the Tinasoria mountain into a viewpoint for mass tourism is introducing a totally distorting element for the life of the people of La Asomada, since access to Tinasoria must necessarily pass through the population center," they point out. According to these residents, the project demands the widening of alleys and roads along which there are centuries-old houses and cisterns from the 19th century. "Cisterns, alcoves and springs that collect water from the Gaida mountain and that are part of the patrimonial, cultural and historical wealth in Lanzarote".
Other actions
For all this, the residents reject the infrastructure, the expansion of the Camino de Caldereta, any type of construction that impacts the landscape of Tinasoria, light pollution in this place, as well as the paving of the roads that go up the mountain.
Faced with this, they are committed to the improvement and improvement of the mountain for sports such as hiking, jogging, cycling, hang gliding, paragliding or hunting and contemplation and uses that do not impact the environment of La Asomada.
