The airline Binter inaugurated this Tuesday the first connection between an airport on a non-capital island and a city on the Peninsula, with the takeoff of the direct Lanzarote-Santander flight.

The institutional event held at Terminal 1 of César Manrique airport was attended by the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort; the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández; the island director of the General State Administration, Pedro Marcial Viera; as well as institutional representatives from the island's town councils.

On behalf of Binter, the Director of Programming, Revenue Management and Alliances, Jonay Lobo, and the Head of Network, Daniel Rosales, attended.

The new connection will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays and represents a growth of more than 40% in the capacity offered between the Canary Islands and Santander compared to the summer season of 2025.

Betancort pointed out during the event that this route “means a qualitative and quantitative leap in the competitiveness of the island of Lanzarote.” He congratulated the airline for making Lanzarote “the first non-capital island to connect directly with national territory.”

“From now on, both the Lanzarote Foreign Promotion Society and the business fabric of Lanzarote have work to do to bond in active policies with the Government of Santander”, he noted, and stressed the need to “join efforts at a business, tourism and cultural level.”

He also pointed out that it is an “opportunity also for the people of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.” “This direct connectivity increases our quality of life,” assured the president.

Jonay Lobo stated that it is the first time the company leaves its “comfort zone” of Gran Canaria and Tenerife: “We believe that Santander is an attractive destination and that there was still room for growth with this new offer.”

Regarding whether there will be more connections to other destinations or from other islands, he assured that it is a “first step.” “We do not rule out anything in the future, but at Binter we go step by step because we want to be cautious. We are based on the quality of service and this needs its time,” Lobo pointed out.

In parallel to the launch of this connection, Turismo Lanzarote has developed a promotional action in Lanzarote with the visit of a group of journalists from Cantabria, belonging to media outlets such as Onda Cero, El Economista, Ifomo.es, DXT Cantabria and Metrópolis, among others.

As a continuation of this strategy, Lanzarote will develop an institutional and business mission to Cantabria on April 6 and 7, with the aim of continuing to strengthen ties and explore new collaboration opportunities. EFE
