El Fondeadero in Puerto del Carmen hosted this Tuesday the inauguration of the II Hermes International Congress on Communication, Audiovisual Media and Analysis in Spain and Latin America, which started on Monday online and this day in person in different scenarios of the municipality and Lanzarote.
“As mayor of the municipality of Tías, I would like to emphasize the great wealth of knowledge exchange that the celebration of this congress in Tías and in our tourist area, in Puerto del Carmen, brings us. For us it is a privilege to be the setting for an international meeting that promotes debate and analyzes the latest advances in global communication,” said the mayor, José Juan Cruz.
Cruz was accompanied at the inaugural table by the Councilor for Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Alberto Aguiar, and the professor from the Catholic University of Uruguay and academic director of the congress, Rosario Sánchez Vilela.

Alberto Aguiar highlighted the importance of the Spanish language, “which is spoken by 600 million people and is the third most used language on the internet” as the common thread of the Hermes congress, while also highlighting “the importance of relations with cultural entities and associations such as Tenique Cultural, VeinenueveTrece, Centro de Datos, Filmoteca Canaria, Muestra de Cine de Lanzarote, Clúster Audiovisual de Canarias, Memoria Digital, Mhjournal, aDResearch, Cinemateca Pedro Zerolo or IS+D”.
Rosario Sánchez Vilela shared her excitement at being on an island like Lanzarote, linked to Uruguay and Montevideo through the founders of this city, of Canarian and also Lanzarote origin. “It is exciting and meaningful to be here with you today,” she said after explaining that the celebration of the Hermes congress represents “a dialogue of encounter in many senses,” due to “the diversity of the topics presented and the different theoretical and methodological perspectives in Spain and Latin America.”

“It is also a dialogue between generations and it is important to point out that the dialogue between Latin America and Spain has the fundamental link of our common language, which is capable of producing knowledge,” she explained. For Rosario Sánchez it is relevant to "dimension the volume of presentations (355) arriving at the congress convened by five thematic lines related to communication."
Pablo Muzás, representing Lanzarote Media, was in charge of welcoming the attendees to the congress and giving the inaugural presentation on the journalistic experiences of the local media La Voz de Lanzarote and Radio Lanzarote.
