The LEP-Sí Podemos group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has managed to get the institution to commit to supplying the island's "food banks".
Following the call for help from several organizations dedicated to distributing food to the most vulnerable families, the formation presented an urgent initiative to the plenary, so that the Cabildo would financially support the Authorized Food Distribution Organizations (O.A.R) of the Las Palmas Food Bank that operate on the island.
This initiative, which was supported by all the groups with representation in the island plenary, seeks to provide an urgent solution so that families who are having the worst time right now continue to receive help to cover the most basic needs such as food. And, from Podemos, they point out that, "according to the delegate of the Food Bank in Lanzarote, José Luís Trujillo, the current demand for this type of aid already reaches 7,400 people, so the organizations are really overwhelmed."
"It is very bad news, that our obligation as public representatives is to try to solve”, said the Podemos councilor in the Cabildo, Jorge Peñas, “The distribution of food is not a solution, it is only a patch that we must put while the situation stabilizes again”, he added.
In addition to the economic partida, the initiative also sought for the Cabildo to acquire surpluses from the primary sector and allocate them to the same purpose, thus doing a double job of social protection. “In this way, in addition to helping families, support will be given to the primary sector that has seen its sales reduced due to the fall in tourism”, said Peñas.
The councilor of the purple formation wanted to make a call to the institutions to continue working from the social care units to reach "more and better" to the protection of families, as well as thanked the staff of the different municipal social services departments for their work and dedication.
