In the recent Debate on the State of the Nation, Parliament supported the proposal of the president of the Sí Podemos Canarias Parliamentary Group, María del Río, for the Government of the Flower Pact to continue with "the promotion of local and proximity products from the Primary Sector," in order to guarantee, in collaboration with the competent public administrations, "a market for Km 0 products in Lanzarote."
"During the lockdown, we valued some professions that were framed in essential services, and the Primary Sector was one of them. A sector that has been fighting for years for its income to meet the expectations of those who dedicate themselves to agricultural, fishing, and livestock work," said Del Río.
Therefore, Sí Podemos Canarias has argued that the profit margins of intermediaries and large supermarket and food distribution chains "cannot be as exorbitant as they are now," so promoting a Km 0 market in Lanzarote will contribute to "dignifying the profession of the women and men who cultivate the land, fish, and take care of the livestock that feeds us."
Among the advantages of proximity products, which are fresher and of higher quality, Del Río highlights the reduction of polluting emissions from transport and the fact that no artificial or chemical products are used to make them, in addition to achieving a healthier diet and a more just and supportive economy.
On the other hand, Del Río also obtained the support of the Regional Chamber to urge the Progressive Government, of which Sí Podemos Canarias is a part, to "launch throughout this year 2021," in collaboration with the relevant local administrations, "accommodation resources that allow dignified accommodation for homeless people residing in Lanzarote, either through the shelter modality or 'Housing First' projects."
"This is about supporting people who are socially excluded for various reasons, who are especially vulnerable and who need urgent attention. Our society cannot allow people to be homeless, without a housing alternative, even less so in these times of health, economic, and social crisis, where the pandemic is wreaking havoc precisely on the most fragile and vulnerable groups of people," said Del Río.
Sí Podemos Canarias recalls that the 'Housing Fist' model is based on the Right to Housing and offers homeless people a single-person apartment in exchange for accepting a weekly social support visit and contributing to the maintenance of the home with a percentage of their income.
Several reports have shown that the vital security provided by housing and the trust that the person feels is placed in them is fundamental for generating processes of overcoming and social integration that do not take place when they are on the street.
