The mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, filed a complaint this Wednesday with the Civil Guard for alleged threats and defamation against him on social networks. This was announced by Betancort himself on his Facebook account, in which he claims to be the victim of a "campaign" to intimidate him.

According to the mayor, it all started "a few weeks ago", when he announced his intention to run again for elections in Teguise. "I received the threat that they were going to destroy my public image, especially using the anonymity of social networks. They even told me that they had a budget established for it," says Betancort.

According to him, after those "threats" came messages with "accusations" and "defamations" through Facebook, which he considers to "exceed the limit of what is politically admissible." For that reason, in addition to filing a complaint, he has also decided to give this response on the same social network.

"Everything has a limit, especially when putting my family at risk"

"I am aware that as a public person I have to submit to the comments and opinions of any citizen and accept them sportingly. I committed to this when I decided to dedicate these years of my life to public service. But, as I said, I understand that everything has a limit, especially when it comes to putting my own family at risk," adds Betantort.

"These days I am verifying that it was not a legitimate political confrontation, but a campaign with which they intend to intimidate me, even reaching my loved ones. That is why, as everything has a limit, this morning (for this Wednesday) I have filed the appropriate complaint with the Civil Guard, so that with the instruments that the law gives us, we can rescue from anonymity those who do not know how to distinguish the debate of ideas from personal aggression," explains the mayor.

In addition, he ends by sending a message to the person or people who may be behind these accusations. "I just want to say to whoever thinks that through this type of trickery they are going to coerce me, that they have chosen the wrong person."
