"With more than 850 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, if Lanzarote were a country, it would be the second with the most cars per person, only behind the Republic of San Marino." This is assured by the candidate of Lanzarote en Pie-Sí Podemos for the presidency of the Cabildo, Nona Perera, for whom "these figures demonstrate the failure and neglect of sustainable mobility policies in recent decades, as well as a dangerous irresponsibility with the future of the island and the planet, and in the face of some of the main global challenges, such as climate change."

Therefore, from Lanzarote en Pie-Sí Podemos they are betting that the legislature that will open from May 26 will be "the one of the decisive impulse to public transport, the use of bicycles safely in urban and interurban areas and the replacement of a polluting car park with another powered by renewable energies." "Lanzarote, due to its size and population distribution, has the perfect measure to be an example in public transport, just the opposite of what has been happening, something unthinkable in a Biosphere Reserve", Perera points out.

"To make it possible, we will bet on increasing the frequency on interurban lines and also on urban lines in Arrecife, on the implementation of transport interchanges in the main residential and tourist locations and on increasing the combinations and coordination between lines that allow transshipment," she says.

The candidacy of Lanzarote en Pie-Sí Podemos considers it necessary to prioritize the destinations to which tourism sector workers go, especially those furthest from the large residential centers, such as Playa Blanca, in addition to facilitating access to the single rate bonus and, within this, "establish special single rates for people with low incomes, pensioners, students or unemployed people", Perera clarifies.

Changing asphalt for more buses

From Lanzarote En Pie - Sí Podemos also point out that "Lanzarote is the island of the Archipelago with the least per capita investment in terms of road agreement", a fact that they consider "requires reconsidering what mobility policy we want".

"Those who have governed us have understood that mobility is synonymous with asphalt, with roads, when a road is filled with cars, as is happening with a good part of the north-south axis, the solution for those who govern us is usually to duplicate or create new roads, despite the territorial limitation of an island like Lanzarote and the values of some environments, such as the agricultural Vega de Mácher, which they also want to asphalt", says Nona Perera.

"Faced with this, we propose changing kilometers of asphalt for more bus lines and more frequency; for a network of truly efficient and safe bike lanes, in addition to promoting from the Cabildo the replacement of combustion vehicles with electric ones", adds the candidate for the presidency of the Cabildo, who believes that "Lanzarote faces the challenge of mobility" and that we have "to decide if we want more roads, more cars, more traffic jams and pollution or if we bet on true sustainability and a firm commitment to the future of the planet".
