At 9:05 a.m. this Friday, the security and emergency protocol of the Alcalde Rafael Cedrés School in Tías was activated after a simulated fire was detected in the school library. This is a drill in which the 726 students, as well as the teaching and administrative staff, participated to test the school's Self-Protection Plan, which has been a success.
The director of the CEIP of Tías, David García, explains that "in just three minutes all the students and teachers of the school have been successfully evacuated to a safe area and a student who presented burns and symptoms of asphyxia due to smoke inhalation has also been rescued".
Faced with this alleged victim, and after a call to the 112 emergency telephone number, the emergency plan was immediately activated and the Civil Protection ambulance with two health technicians and the agents of the Local Police of Tías arrived at the scene. The drill continued before the expectation of the students with the cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers of the victim, which allowed to save the life of the child and the subsequent transfer to the General Hospital José Molina Orosa.
The students of Infant and Primary school were able to know, thanks to this practical exercise, what is the correct way to act in an emergency situation and understood the importance of preventing and keeping calm.
Also, this morning another practical exercise was carried out in the school by the volunteers and health technicians of Civil Protection who helped a student after a fall on a bicycle and who, not wearing a helmet, suffered a traumatic brain injury. After a first assessment to know if the injured person was conscious or not, a secondary assessment was carried out and a cervical collar was placed to immobilize the victim's neck.
In this sense, Benjamín Nieves, technician in Emergencies and Civil Protection and Tomás Ramírez, coordinator of Civil Protection of Tías valued very positively this simulation and the good response of the center and its students, as well as the different emergency services in a similar situation in real life.
