The councilor for Tourism, Commerce and Sports of Arrecife, Eli Merino (Partido Popular), intervened this Friday morning on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero to review the management of her different areas in the capital. Furthermore, she announced that this year there will be no April Fair in Lanzarote.

The councilwoman of Arrecife has reported that, for the first time since 2023, the controversial April Fair will not be held, the festivity imported from Andalusia that Eli Merino organizes in the capital of Lanzarote since 2023 and that has awakened the criticism of the opposition and part of the population for its lack of roots on the island.

Merino has confirmed that before the Christmas holidays, she met with the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León (PP), and they decided not to hold the April Fair this year. "We had a meeting when the Cabildo's framework contract fell through and we had to make a decision about the events," the head of Tourism highlighted.

Currently, the City Council must work with a minimum of six to eight months to process contracts such as the one for the April Fair. With the celebration of Christmas and the Carnival of the capital, Merino has assured that they knew that the Contracting and Intervention Departments were "going to collapse" and that they decided to prioritize "popular festivals and our traditional festivals".

"With all the pain in my heart," Merino has pointed out, they have decided not to celebrate this party, while assuring that "our traditional parties will of course be celebrated."

Rumors about the PP Spokespersonship in Arrecife

"Yes, I have heard, yes, it is true, I am not going to deny it," the councilwoman has highlighted. However, she has assured that her party has not informed her of anything directly.

"I think that maybe they will be movements before congresses or movements before the 2027 elections, I don't know," he pointed out. Meanwhile, he assured that he has always had the support of his fellow councilors and the party president on the island, Ástrid Pérez.
