Canary Islands received in January 44.2% of the international air passengers arrived in Spain

International arrivals to the archipelago in the first month of the year were 1.9% higher than those registered in January of the previous year

Spain received 6.7 million passengers in January from international airports, which shows an increase of 5.2% compared to the same month last year, and Canary Islands, where arrivals rose by 1.9%, received 44.2% of them, according to Turespaña.

Specifically, the flow from Europe registered an increase of 3.5%, while from America 8.1% more arrived and Asia experienced a 20% increase, as the institution pointed out this Wednesday in a statement.

In January, an increase in international passenger arrivals was recorded from all major issuing markets, except for Germany, which registered a 2.8% drop.

 

United Kingdom generates 16% of arrivals and Germany loses weight

Among the main issuing markets, United Kingdom issued around 1.1 million international passengers and generated 16.6% of the total flow of arrivals to Spain in January, which represents a year-on-year increase of 1.6%.

Canary Islands was its main destination, with a share of 44.2% of the total flow, followed by the Valencian Community and Andalusia with shares of 14% and 12.6% respectively.

From Germany, 0.7 million passengers flew in January (10.3% of the total), 2.6% less, a drop that affects the Balearic Islands above all and also the Canary Islands. In January, the Canary archipelago was the main recipient, with a share of 42.1% of arrivals, followed by Catalonia with 14.6%.

From Italy, for its part, came 10.9% of the passenger flow (730,365), 2.1% more, and it mainly benefited the Community of Madrid and Catalonia with the joint reception of 60.8% of the total flow.

France issued 7% of the total passengers, 1% more, and Madrid accounted for 34.7% of arrivals and Catalonia 27.9%.

Furthermore, passengers arriving from Netherlands represented 4.2% of the total, 4.1% lower, and their main destination was the Valencian Community, with an increase of 3.3%.

Turespaña also highlights the increases in Poland, Ireland, and the United States.

As for the rest of the countries, the Persian Gulf and Asian countries, China, South Korea, and Japan, stand out for their volume of arrivals and evolution, with double-digit increases. Among the Ibero-American countries, the evolution of all markets was positive.
