"I estimate that 45 days after the plenary agreement is published, those interested in buying the land will be able to do so," Marcial Martín estimated in statements to Radio Lanzarote. "But the moment is not good, because we are in the middle of an economic recession and that is affecting construction. People are withdrawn," he added.
This pessimism of the mayor was also transferred to the state of the action units (segments into which the industrial and commercial land of Playa Honda is divided). "Not even in this legislature will they be completely developed," he confessed. "I will be happy if at least half of it is developed," he added. According to the mayor, three of these units are starting to take off.
Regarding what use the City Council will give to the income from the sale of this land, the mayor has been clear: "to attend to the needs of the residents of the entire municipality." And as examples, Marcial Martín recalled that there are areas with deficient public lighting, unpaved or without sidewalks, as well as a large part of the historical artistic heritage that is disappearing due to lack of conservation. "By law, we cannot use that money to give subsidies or to pay payrolls or supplier invoices," the mayor emphasized.
Asked about the poor efficiency of the urban planning management of his City Council, Marcial Martín indicated that they have "highly qualified" technical personnel who are obtaining magnificent results. "Our illusion is to find out about everything that moves in the Canary Islands, Spain and Europe, although we need many more technicians," the mayor acknowledged.
Another of the issues that was discussed in the Plenary was the modification of the ordinance by which the taxi drivers of San Bartolomé are integrated into the Integral Taxi System (Auriga). Finally, the Cabildo rejected the allegations presented by the taxi drivers' association and now it only remains for the ordinance to be published and put into operation. "I am sure that the taxi drivers of San Bartolomé will integrate into the system without major problems. From here I take the opportunity to thank them for their understanding," the mayor explained.
