Insect and rodent plagues, lack of maintenance and cleaning, and chaotic advertising that crowds the space, are the main problems of the Pueblo Marinero space according to the insular confluence Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos in the Teguise city council.
The confluence assures that the commercial activity of the space conceived by César Manrique is being affected by these problems "a direct consequence of the city council's neglect". For this reason, the spokesperson in the Teguise consistory has presented a series of measures to the city council plenary so that the space recovers its splendor and favors a correct coexistence between artistic heritage and commercial and tourist activity.
Enjoy public spaces
The councilor emphasizes the need to clean up the Pueblo Marinero due to the need for the town of Costa Teguise to have quality public spaces for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. "Costa Teguise, due to the lack of planning it has always suffered, is a disjointed and uncomfortable town, and the Pueblo Marinero is an important commercial and promenade center that is an oasis in the area," says Elsa Betancort.
In addition, the artist César Manrique actively collaborated in the design of the space and constitutes a "sign of identity that is very necessary in an eminently tourist center such as Costa Teguise", which means in the eyes of Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos that protection must go further. "It is unacceptable that a space like this has this lack of maintenance and cleaning and even the merchants are concerned about the rats that are usually seen and bother their customers," says Elsa Betancort.
Ordinance to regulate advertising and outdoor furniture
The greatest attraction of the Manrique space is, according to the councilor, its visual appearance and the Lanzarote style that characterizes it. From her point of view, "the exterior advertising of commercial establishments must be respectful of this Manrique aesthetic so loved in Lanzarote so that visitors feel this as the unique and charming space that it is."
The confluence considers that the City Council should begin to work on a municipal ordinance that regulates the advertising use and the placement of outdoor furniture to achieve a visual homogenization of the Pueblo Marinero and has already achieved the unanimous support of the municipal plenary. "We will be very aware that the government group fulfills these commitments that are so necessary for Costa Teguise," the councilor concludes.
Other essential measures
The motion defended by Lanzarote en Pie - Sí Podemos and supported by all the political groups that make up the plenary, establishes other measures that they consider essential to improve the state and operation of the Pueblo Marinero.
On the one hand, it establishes different maintenance and cleaning measures, also of the garden areas, that beautify the space. In addition, the confluence takes into account the delicate situation of small businesses in the area and proposes a series of tax incentives and the revision of the file of the municipal architectural catalog of Teguise in order to speed up the procedures for licenses and permits for establishments near the Pueblo Marinero.
