Oswaldo Betancort has announced that he has already initiated "the first step in the relevant administrative process for the island institution to be renamed 'Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa', a proposal that was taken to the plenary session this Friday with the Government's intention that it be an Institutional Declaration supported by the entire Corporation."

Bearing in mind that the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands has recognised La Graciosa as the eighth island of the Canary archipelago since 2018, a recognition approved unanimously in the Senate, Oswaldo Betancort has requested the "initiation of proceedings for the highest governing body to be designated as 'Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa'.

“If La Graciosa has enjoyed recognition as an island with its own identity for five years, after many years of demands from its inhabitants, we want to take a further step so that our eighth Canary Island is also identified in the Cabildo”, Betancort said in this regard.

"In its day, it was a milestone to register a popular initiative demanding greater administrative autonomy for La Graciosa, because it also meant being able to claim the rights of the people of La Graciosa with the backing of a new Statute of the Canary Islands", adds Betancort.

“With that same purpose, my commitment as president is to keep the promise I made to my neighbours in La Graciosa who also want to see themselves reflected and legitimised as citizens with full rights, so this will be more than just a symbolic gesture”, he concludes.
