The island director of Education of Lanzarote, Juan Cruz, has indicated this Thursday that the Ministry guarantees the safety of the facilities of Casa Ajei, where the children of the El Quintero school of San Bartolomé attend classes. Cruz rules out that the Government intervenes to classify the land for the new school as suitable, if the City Council fails to carry out that classification.

Cruz has assured that Education will "attend to and improve the conditions of Casa Ajei to ensure that, while not optimal, they are acceptable." Faced with the municipal request that the Government classify the land of the plot where the new school could be located, which is not endowment land, he has indicated that it should be the City Council that carries out these procedures.

Cruz has recalled that the Government has that power in case the City Council proves incapable of ordering its own land and that it has only been exercised once, in Puerto del Rosario, because there was a deficit of 3,000 educational places and a center evicted due to poor conditions.

"Arrecife or Yaiza could request this with more need," he pointed out, since they also do not have an approved General Plan, and in Arrecife up to three more centers are needed. Cruz has also stated that the City Council can make a specific modification to the planning to change the land use, even if it takes longer, as Tías did in the past.

The mayor of San Bartolomé, Marcial Martín, asked this week that the Government speed up the procedures to be able to locate the El Quintero school on the land that corresponds to it, which is not suitable land.

The municipality has not approved a new General Plan, and the works of the school cannot begin until then. Meanwhile, 187 children study in Casa Ajei and this year, there will be 48 more. Cruz has pointed out that there is capacity for 250 places and that they will try to improve the conditions until the new center is built.
