CC.OO. warns about the tourism crisis, which is being felt in the working conditions of the workers

Delia Rodríguez, general secretary of CC.OO. Canarias, believes that "a decisive halt to tourism and urban growth is needed, since oversupply endangers the entire model, with possible job losses due to low occupancy and low profitability of each tourist bed".

She assures that "the workers of the Canary Islands are already suffering from the scenario of oversupply of tourist beds and a decrease in tourist spending and the number of days of stay, with the increase in workload and the pressure of longer hours, as well as the loss of real purchasing power with respect to the rise in prices".

The union considers it essential to generate a social debate on the situation of this sector and the factors that will condition its immediate future, but assures that "the Canary Islands cannot face any serious challenge regarding the future of the sector if it continues to add beds to its already overcrowded offer".

That is why it is in favor of "growth 0" without exception. Last April, the union presented a document on the extension of the so-called "tourism moratorium" to various instances of the Government of the Canary Islands, according to CC.OO. the document included "proposals for the debate that have not yet been answered by the Canarian Executive".

They are committed to the "revaluation and promotion of the alternative offer to sun and beach tourism" with products related to the natural environment, culture, heritage and other original values of the territory, such as rural tourism, which according to CC.OO. "can help to value (from the point of view of employment and wealth) rural and inland municipalities" and add that these are areas that currently present "a comparative situation of abandonment with respect to the coast".

They also warn of the energy problem and climate change, calling for "society as a whole to address the repercussions of rising fossil fuel prices on the tourism economy".
