Coalición Canaria (CC) this Wednesday secured the commitment of the Government group of San Bartolomé to begin the procedures to build a municipal “sports and therapeutic” swimming pool in Playa Honda.

CC brought a motion to the plenary session in which it "urged the City Council to transfer the management and land of the Playa Honda Sports Center to the Cabildo, given the inability of the socialist Government group to reopen it after its closure in early 2020 due to the pandemic."

A motion that CC finally left on the table after securing the commitment of the mayor to initiate, as soon as possible, the procedures for drafting a project and request inter-administrative collaboration from the Cabildo of Lanzarote to provide Playa Honda with a municipal swimming pool.

The nationalist spokesperson in San Bartolomé, David Rocío, is satisfied that “finally, and thanks to the insistence of both CC and other political forces in the opposition, the Government group is committed not only to the construction of the swimming pool but also to proceeding with the reopening of the Sports Center.”

In this sense, Rocío criticizes that “after the return to normality, the PSOE has used all kinds of excuses in the face of its manifest inability to reopen this sports facility, without management and without activities since its closure due to the pandemic in early 2020”; and underlines the “real interest” of the Cabildo “in the construction of a swimming pool for sports and therapeutic uses for the town of Playa Honda.”

CC “welcomes” that “a town lacking community land” such as Playa Honda has this facility, which “will improve the services of the town, the municipality and, most importantly, the quality of life of the residents of Playa Honda, Güime, Montaña Blanca, El Islote, Mozaga and San Bartolomé.”

The nationalist spokesperson recalls that since the closure of the Sports Center by the Government group, “we had been informed in various plenary sessions, in response to various motions or questions asked, of the intention to take out the management under a minor contract or the holding of a contest for a relatively short period of time, while the specifications for the definitive public tender were being prepared, understanding as such one of long temporality.”

However, David Rocío continues, “the reality is that there was never a minor tender, nor management based on a minor contract”, although “there was a call based on a specification that unfortunately for all the residents of the town of Playa Honda and the municipality of San Bartolomé was deserted.”

Likewise, he recalls that “after the return to normality” both CC and other political forces of the opposition “have been constant in expressing their interest” in the start-up of the Playa Honda Sports Center, but “for different reasons or excuses” its reopening “has not been completed.”
