The Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Antonio Castro, stated yesterday that the regional Executive should not "interfere" in the strike planned for the coming months of November and December at the airline Binter. According to Castro, the Government should limit itself to closely monitoring the process "since the powers in this matter" are held by the Ministry of Development.

Castro, who made these statements in response to a question asked by the deputy of the socialist group, Julio Cruz, about the actions that the Executive will take in the face of the Binter strike, recalled that the Government already closely monitored the entire process of transferring Iberia's handling powers to Binter, through the company Atlántica de Handling, while stating that "I do not believe that the Ministry of Development would like an administration that does not have powers to mediate in this conflict."

Likewise, Antonio Castro explained that this strike is not the result of an action by the Works Council, but rather that "three out of 14 Binter workers did not accept the new contract." Therefore, he reiterated that the Canarian Government does not have to participate in negotiations in which AENA and the Ministry of Development must be involved.

The deputy of the Socialist group, Julio Cruz, recalled the "difficult situation" that was created at Lanzarote Airport last summer and warned of the "chaos" that this strike could generate in all the airports of the islands.

Although he acknowledged that the Canarian Government lacks powers in airports, he clarified that the mobility of Canarians does depend on this institution. For Cruz, the Government must "act and reconcile positions", in addition to closely monitoring a situation that "will affect thousands of citizens."
