The decree of the Government of the Canary Islands adopting measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus will force the suspension of the Carnivals of Tinajo, Teguise and Yaiza, since in these cases events are held that bring together more than a thousand people. This has been confirmed by the Councilor for Security and Emergencies of the Cabildo, Francisco Javier Aparicio, who nevertheless has made it clear that it must be the town councils who communicate this decision.

In the case of Teguise, it has already sent a statement announcing the cancellation of the Carnival, and therefore of all the events planned in La Villa, in Costa Teguise and La Graciosa. In addition, the street market in Teguise will not be held for two Sundays, since the measure ordered by the regional Executive will be in force for 14 days.

Regarding Tinajo, the Emergency Councilor of the Cabildo has confirmed to La Voz that he has already spoken by phone with the Councilor for Festivities and has informed her that they will adopt the same decision, suspending the Carnivals scheduled for this weekend to comply with that decree.

Finally, the Yaiza City Council also suspends all events of the Playa Blanca Carnival.

In addition, this Thursday it will be studied what to do with a sporting event scheduled for this weekend, the Ultrabike, which runs one day through La Graciosa and the next through several points of Lanzarote. "In this case it does not bring together more than a thousand people, but we have to sit down with the organizer, with Santa Rosa, to analyze it and make a decision," said Kiko Aparicio.

Regarding the rest of the sports activities, the federations themselves are recommending suspending any match throughout Spain, including friendlies. Thus, although it was initially announced that they would all be held but behind closed doors, the sports matches such as football, basketball and handball are finally being canceled.
