The Governing Council has approved an agreement that establishes new guidelines to facilitate the hiring of substitute teaching staff on a part-time basis in the Canarian public universities, with the aim of "guaranteeing teaching coverage in unforeseen situations and strengthening the functioning of the university system as a whole, thus responding to the request of academic institutions."
The agreement establishes that this contractual figure is assimilated, for compatibility purposes, to the associated university teaching staff, which will allow personnel from the Public Administration of the Autonomous Community to combine certain functions with part-time teaching tasks. This possibility will be applied on a case-by-case basis, always respecting the current regime of incompatibilities and without modifying its legal framework.
According to the regional government, "the measure will benefit all the public universities of the archipelago and will allow addressing the needs of teaching staff with greater agility, especially when there are absences or situations that require an immediate response. It will also have a particularly positive impact on centers where alternatives are more limited, such as the Nursing Schools of Lanzarote and La Palma.
The Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, explained that "this is a useful and necessary measure to provide a quick and effective response to teaching needs, without compromising the quality of the training we offer in the Canary Islands."
“This agreement makes a flexible tool available to our universities to ensure that substitutions are made quickly and rigorously, which is essential for the academic year to develop normally on all the islands,” she added.
This initiative has had the technical support of the bodies responsible for public function, health and university quality, and will be transferred to the competent areas for its application.
