Canal Gestión Lanzarote has issued a statement to explain its decision to cut off the water supply in all the “non-essential dependencies” of the Tinajo City Council, due to the debt that the Corporation maintains.
The company assures that for four years, Tinajo has stopped paying “each and every one of the invoices”, corresponding to 40 different supply policies. In total, it indicates that there are 794 unpaid invoices, which add up to an accumulated debt of 87,850.33 euros, “without taking into account additional costs”.
In addition, Canal emphasizes that “to date there is no claim from the City Council regarding these invoices”, which, however, have not been paid.
“Canal Gestión Lanzarote has sent a total of 21 letters during these four years claiming payment thereof. In addition, two supply cut-off notices were sent, in the months of February (which was never carried out) and October of this year. The letters also did not obtain any response”, the company points out.
After these claims did not bear fruit, Canal states that it filed a lawsuit with the Contentious-Administrative Courts of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and has now decided to take this new step.
In this regard, it emphasizes that it has complied with the Law and the Regulations of the Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Service of the Island of Lanzarote, maintaining the supply in essential services. “The execution of the supply cut-off has only affected 27 policies of the 40 that the Tinajo City Council maintains with this operator”, he specifies.
In its statement, Canal also emphasizes that although it provides the service by concession from the Water Consortium, which is made up of the Cabildo and the seven municipalities of the island, this “does not exempt the aforementioned institutions from maintaining supply contracts with the operating company, and must comply with the contractual conditions in this regard, as required of any other subscriber”.
