Bergaz demands the Canarian Government to "finish once and for all" the new water pipe in the north of Lanzarote

The socialist deputy stated that "the island needs good news and one of them would be the commissioning of this new pipe, which will allow more water to be carried and reduce the usual breakages and losses in the current network"

The deputy of the socialist parliamentary group for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz, has demanded this Friday from the Minister of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands, the nationalist Manuel Miranda, the need to conclude "once and for all" the works of the northern line, the new water distribution pipe that will connect Zonzamas with Arrieta, as it is a "strategic" work to address the water crisis that Lanzarote is suffering.

This request was made during the question asked to the highest water authority of the regional executive about the execution status of the so-called northern line, the new water distribution pipe that will directly benefit the towns of Tahíche, Guatiza, Mala, Tabayesco, Arrieta and Punta Mujeres, and indirectly, the entire north, as water will be pumped from Arrieta to Haría, Máguez, Órzola or Guinate.

Bergaz reminded the minister that "the works, assigned to the public company Tragsa and financed with a budget of more than nine million euros, began in April 2021, under the presidency of Ángel Víctor Torres in the Canary Islands and María Dolores Corujo in the Cabildo".

"Lanzarote needs good news, Minister, and one of them would be the commissioning of this new pipe, which will allow more water to be carried and reduce the usual breakages and losses in the current network," said Bergaz. "Even more so when we are talking about one of the largest investments being made on our island, after numerous vicissitudes in terms of administrative authorizations and the layout itself".

"In November 2023 I already asked you about the deadline for its completion, aware of the water crisis that Lanzarote is suffering and the unjustifiable delay of works whose completion would be received as a blessing by the island's society and the Water Consortium, an entity formed by the seven municipalities and the Cabildo of Lanzarote," the Lanzarote deputy interjected.

"You told us June 2024, we are on our way to the summer of 2025 and the work is not finished, despite the water emergency in which Lanzarote finds itself and the need for its completion, Minister," Bergaz appealed. "Meanwhile, the municipalities of Teguise and Haría that will benefit from this action, are waiting; while water cuts occur in homes and the northern countryside," Bergaz concluded.

To conclude the parliamentary intervention, the Lanzarote deputy appealed to Miranda to "put that new pipe at the service of the island once and for all". "Now you tell us that it will be in July 2025, more than 365 days after the date announced by yourself at the end of 2023, hopefully it will be the definitive one, because Lanzarote sees the months go by without significant improvements in water matters: a lot of announcements and few realities, Minister".
