"Lanzarote is the island with the most people prosecuted for political corruption in Europe." This was stated this Monday in an event in Santa Cruz de Tenerife by the former State lawyer and current Ciudadanos (Cs) candidate to the Congress of Deputies for Madrid, Edmundo Bal, who was accompanied by the candidate to the Congress for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Melisa Rodríguez; the Cs candidate for the presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, Vidina Espino; and the Cs candidate for the mayoralty of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Matilde Zambudio.
In this regard, Bal pointed out that "Ciudadanos has demonstrated with facts that it fights every day to end political corruption in Spain", and has demonstrated it, for example, in Murcia or Madrid.
To end political corruption, it is necessary to "depoliticize justice, protect whistleblowers, and defend public officials."
He also announced that "Ciudadanos will also guarantee the independence of the State Attorney General's Office, and will reform the Statute of the Prosecutor's Office for this purpose."
The former State lawyer also denounced "the control of the judicial power by the PP and PSOE", and recalled that he was dismissed for "refusing to remove from the order of the trial of the procés the injuries suffered by the civil guards and national police officers who were watching over security."
"The Government that has to defend the State Security Forces and Corps is capable of saying that the injury reports are not relevant for the investigation", something unheard of "if one takes into account that Sánchez is responsible for these police forces."
For her part, the Cs candidate to the Congress of Deputies, Melisa Rodríguez, has emphasized that "Canary Islands, thanks to Ciudadanos, has been the first Autonomous Community to eliminate political immunities."
"The privileges are over", and now "politicians will have to testify in the same courts as the rest of the citizens of this country."
The Cs candidate for the presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, Vidina Espino, has stated that "next May 26 will be the first time in history that an accused president will run in the elections."
For this reason, and because it "damages the image of the institution", Espino has asked him to "step aside until his legal situation is resolved."
Finally, the Cs candidate for the mayoralty of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Matilde Zambudio, pointed out that "it is necessary to provide the justice system with the necessary means to speed up the deadlines and professionals can do their job."
