The Councilor for Cleaning of the Arrecife City Council, Jacobo Lemes, announces that the capital Consistory will impose new penalties on the company holding the cleaning service, Urbaser S.A, which would be added to the two files initiated at the end of 2023, due to the lack of maintenance of the machinery and the lack of maintenance and cleaning of containers and their location. Serious breaches for which the company already faces a penalty amounting to 18,000 euros.

The councilor also points out that, given the repeated violations of the contract, the City Council has not certified 100% of the monthly fee submitted by the company, amounting to 75,542.35 euros, in invoices submitted from June to October 2023.

"We couldn't agree more with the discomfort of the workers themselves, who have denounced in a press release the existence of deficiencies in garbage collection vehicles and containers. That is why the City Council is already acting," said Lemes, who stresses that "compliance with a contract is vital for the well-being of citizens, which includes both residents and workers."

The files opened to date are motivated by the lack of maintenance of machinery attached to the execution of the contract and for not performing the tasks of cleaning, conservation and maintenance of containerization points, nor of the containers themselves.

The councilor assures that all cases of lack of maintenance and breakdowns have been communicated to the contractor on several occasions without anything being done to resolve the situation.

"The lack of maintenance of the machinery or the failure to replace it when it is broken down, is a serious breach of the company's obligations, nor is the maintenance required by the contract done," Lemes stresses.
