The Department of Health of the Arrecife City Council announces the completion of the construction of 48 new niches in the municipal cemetery of San Román. With this action, which adds to the 60 niches built in January of last year, the total number of funeral spaces created since the beginning of the current term amounts to almost 700.
According to the councilman, who has recently been able to supervise the progress of the works, accompanied by the Deputy Mayor and Head of the Contracting Area, Echedey Eugenio, "the execution of the new niches is scheduled to conclude next Wednesday, February 12, meeting the planned deadlines."
Eugenio has stressed that these works are being carried out by the company Edificios Lanzarote SL, and have a budget of 36,444.33 euros plus 2,551.10 euros of IGIC, financed through budget application 164 62216 Cemetery and Funeral Services, framed within the cemetery expansion project.
“This is an action that is part of our commitment to improve and expand municipal infrastructures, thus ensuring an effective response to the growing demand for funeral spaces in the city”, says the councilman.
For his part, the capital's head of Health, Jacobo Lemes, stresses that it is essential to continue expanding burial spaces to meet the needs of the population of Arrecife. “From the Department of Health we work continuously to improve the cemetery facilities and offer a dignified service to our citizens”, he said.
In fact, it should be remembered that in November 2024, the municipal plenary approved an ambitious expansion project of the capital's cemetery, which includes the construction of 2,800 new niches in an adjacent area of 5,578.48 square meters. This expansion will guarantee the capacity of the cemetery until at least 2030, allowing the city to have adequate infrastructure for its growing population.
