Arrecife has formalized the creation of the Marina Council and its intersectoral working group. The new body brings together the different sectors of society and the local economy "with an interest in the proper use of the Arrecife marina and its special environmental sensitivity." The City Council's Department of the Environment defines the creation of the Council as "an important step in the ordering and sustainable management of the capital's marine resources."
The formalization of this body took place last week, after a work process that began in April 2014. "In line with the Lanzarote 2020 Island Strategy and its associated action plans, a Diagnosis, a Strategy and a Plan for the Use and Sustainable Management of resources for the Arrecife coastline were developed," explain from the City Council.
With the creation of the Intersectoral Working Group, which integrates the different sectors "with an interest in the proper use of this space and in the special environmental sensitivity of the capital's marina, the Action Plan of the Arrecife City Council is implemented," they add.
Based on the contributions received in the interaction with some 35 representatives of society and the local economy, up to 25 projects to be gradually executed from now until 2020 were identified. "All these projects have a common objective: to improve the sustainability of the environment and achieve a greater balance between the social, economic and environmental development of the space," they point out from the Consistory. With the creation of the Arrecife Marina Council and its management body, the Intersectoral Working Group, "what is foreseen in the aforementioned Plan for Use and Management is fulfilled," they add.
A forum for all sectors related to the coast
This Working Group already has the participation of numerous sectors, among which, among others, representatives of the fishing sector, diving, protection and conservation of marine species, flora and fauna, institutions, the private sector, education, the Biosphere Reserve and the residents of the marina.
"They all have the commitment to work together and in a coordinated manner, in the planning and gradual execution of projects that represent a positive impact on the environment and with benefits for all," the City Council states in its note.
The general coordination of this Table will be in charge of the Technical area of the City Council's Department of the Environment and the Board of Directors of the Table. The board, which is chaired by Domingo Delgado Morín and has Rafael Mesa in the General Secretariat, Gustavo Tejera in Communication and Teno Osorio in charge of Projects, will manage the interaction with the member sectors to "generate consensus and advance towards a more sustainable Arrecife coastline, with a greater balance and more prosperous".
Finally, the Consistory emphasizes that the incorporation of new members is an open process and within which any representative of a certain sector who is committed to the sustainable development of the coast is invited to participate. In this sense, the Councilor for the Environment, Rafael Juan González, invites those interested in learning more details or joining the initiative to contact the Technical area of the Department of the Environment of the Arrecife City Council.
