The Arrecife City Council is continuing with the works plan to "improve the current rainwater drainage network to avoid, as far as possible, the impact that has so far been caused by flooding in several areas of the capital of Lanzarote".
This week, the Department of Public Works of the capital's Consistory, under the direction of the popular councillor Roberto Herbón, has started work to widen the existing drains in El Antonio street, in the Titerroy neighbourhood. With the works, which are being carried out directly by municipal workers, larger capacity channelling and drains are being placed in the vicinity of the Language School building, "a point that has so far been critical in the Titerroy neighbourhood during times of heavy rain".
The councillor has visited the neighbourhood to check on the progress of the works and has announced that, in addition, a check will be carried out in these days with cameras inside the rainwater and sanitation network to detect, under the subsoil, possible breakages or obstructions that affect the drainage in the network.
Last February, the City Council completed the installation of the new and large drain in the accesses to the Altavista neighbourhood, through the roundabout in León y Castillo street, at its exit towards the northern road.
"All these new improvements, which are carried out with municipal resources, are part of the plan launched by the mayoress Astrid Pérez to develop, during this term of office, several actions in the rainwater network to minimise the impact of flooding due to these deficiencies detected in the drains", the City Council points out in a statement. In addition, the mayoress has announced that the Government of the Canary Islands is processing the tender for the drafting of an engineering project for the channelling in Portugal Street, another of the critical areas when rainstorms arrive.
