The former president of the Lanzarote Popular Party considers it necessary to accelerate the end of the current transition period as soon as possible and elect a person "who has the support of the majority"

Alejandro Díaz does not rule out running for re-election as president of the PP

The regional parliamentarian, who is clear that Soria will not be able to count on his vote in the congress that should theoretically be held in 2007, aligns himself within a critical sector that questions the policy that is being followed in the Canary Islands under the ideological direction of Larry Álvarez

Neither yes nor no. The former president of the Popular Party (PP) in Lanzarote, Alejandro Díaz, does not rule out running as a candidate to hold again the position he had to leave after the crisis that both he and his colleagues created in the Cabildo at the behest of the regional leadership of his party, although he is not sure that he will do so either.

At the moment there is a period of reflection in the PP in which it is necessary to analyze the reason for such an awkward and inopportune decision that deprived them of concluding the legislature holding the presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote for the first time in its history, which evidently none of its current leaders ends up forgiving. Once the work of the management team is finished, a congress will have to be called to elect the new island leadership of the party, and that will be the moment when the mess begins, since the now ousted Alejandro Díaz has not yet said that he is not going to run to face the theoretical candidate presented by the sector related to José Manuel Soria.

The regional parliamentarian spoke about all these issues today on the radio program that opens the mornings of the Island, Buenos Días Lanzarote, where he once again showed the reasons that have led to the radical change in his status within the party that the president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria directs with a firm hand.

In no case did he want to hide that relations with Soria and those who support him are not good, "especially because there are those who have understood my position regarding what happened, there are those who have understood it less and there are those who have not understood anything." Among those who have not understood anything is the regional president of the PP himself, who has already looked at the ceiling on occasion when he has crossed paths with his colleague from Lanzarote in the corridors of the Tenerife hemicycle.

Despite his situation, he confessed that he is now serene and with a clear conscience, working in his professional office and in his role as a parliamentarian, presenting all those initiatives that have to do with aspects of general interest in Lanzarote. "Here I am, open to everything that the PP of Lanzarote says we should do in the Parliament of the Canary Islands. We are not going to vary one iota from our positions," he stressed.

Asked about the possibility that the numerous errors that have been committed throughout the current legislature will take their toll on the leader of the Canary Islands Popular Party, Díaz said that he dared to recommend to Soria that he surround himself with a person who knows how to mark a clear and defined strategy, since in his view Larry Álvarez, the theoretical ideologue of the party, "is not knowing how to design adequate strategies for the PP." "There have always been opposing voices, but what determines a change are the congresses," he commented, stating bluntly that "it is evident" that the current president of the PP will not be able to count on his endorsement in the next congress, which if nothing happens should be held at the end of 2007, when the local and regional elections have already been held.

Work of the management team and Soria's management

With regard to the meetings that are being held by the management team chaired by María Dolores Luzardo, the former president of the Lanzarote PP considers that there are already many members of the formation who have made known their desire for the transition period to end in the shortest possible time. "It seems that the management team is in favor of calling the congress, but we must also be consistent and transmit to the regional leadership that a date must be set. This is what all the militants and supporters of the PP in Lanzarote are waiting for, and it would be a way to definitively end this situation, opening a stage in which someone who has the support of the majority is elected and directs the destinies of the party in the coming years," he detailed, expressing his hope that in the month of September it will be known when it will be held.

Regarding the certain possibility that he is the person who will once again bring together the support of the majority, he limited himself to indicating that "I will wait for the congress to be called to determine whether this possibility is fulfilled or not." "Anyone who has the necessary endorsements will be able to present themselves," he recalled, betting on there being more candidacies than in previous congresses due to the relaxation that has occurred in the requirements to present themselves.

Similarly, he expressed his clear opinion on the reform of the Statute of Autonomy and on the possible suppression of the so-called triple parity, the system that balances the presence in Parliament of the capital islands and the non-capital islands. Specifically, he recalled that he already expressed in his Parliamentary Group the position he maintains on an issue that he believes must be debated in depth and given many turns. "Before making a decision on a possible electoral reform, we should know what they think in each of the islands that are going to be affected, and it should be the island leaderships of the party that should make a decision. There is a lot of talk about the issue but there is no unanimous and defined criterion either," he explained
